News: Best to not gamble on fundraising (Kansas City, MO)

“It takes money to keep an outfit like the Kansas City Roller Warriors afloat.

Earlier this month, the all-female roller derby league announced a fundraiser in the form of a Texas hold ’em poker tournament. But after a week of promoting the $25 “donation” tournament, the event was abruptly canceled “due to unforeseen circumstances.”

That notice was sent by e-mail about an hour after The Kansas City Star had inquired of league officials whether league lawyers had vetted and approved the event as legal.

Because of the apparent pay-to-play requirement, it appeared not to be.

“We know other companies that have done them,” said Rollers co-director Kemberley Elliott. “But the girls got real skittish and thought it would be in our best interest to cancel it.”

Good decision. Most applicable gambling laws are fuzzy and not often applied consistently…”
