Event: NBA Stars and Legends Play for Charity (Las Vegas, NV)

“Today’s top NBA players would have an edge on the basketball court against the legends of the game who are a little older and possibly rusty from a few years of retirement, but that is not the case when competing at a poker table. At the third annual New School Versus Old School charity poker tournament, current NBA superstars such as Jason Kidd and Tracy McGrady will be pitted against retired pros including Spud Webb and Julius Erving in a poker tournament Aug. 11 in the Mirage high-limit lounge.”

WSOP: Poker for charity (Las Vegas, NV)

“Just back from the media tournament, which was an enjoyable hour or so of pretending to be a fearsomely aggressive player before my Q3 was shattered by a pair of jacks.

The event took place in the Amazon Room of the Rio Pavilion, the main tournament area of the WSOP. Today is satellite day, the last chance for players to win their way into the Main Event for a twentieth or a tenth of the $10,000 entry ticket.

Casino: Poker Room Review – The Silver Fox (Everett, MA)

“The set up is this: Though poker is officially illegal in Massachusetts, they play no-limit hold’em tournaments legally under a ‘charity raffle and bazaar’ license. This gives them the ability to have the equivalent of a Las Vegas night. But they do it on a regular basis, with different charities on different nights of the week. They’re open now Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6PM to midnight. They spread sit-and-go tournaments, and a couple of large multi-table no-limit hold’em tournaments as well. There are no cash games. All of the tourneys are no-limit hold’em. There are house dealers.

Legal: Quebec lacking poker strategy: Lazarus (Canada)

“Operating a gaming company, or even hosting a tournament, online or otherwise, is illegal under the Canadian criminal code. According to Canadian law, provinces were given the exclusive right to operate gambling schemes, including lottery tickets and casinos.

However, there are certain exceptions to this rule. One is that provinces can issue licenses to charitable and religious organizations to hold certain gambling events.

“It’s [poker] used as a charitable tool, you know, to raise funds for many charities. It’s probably one of the most popular tools today used almost anywhere in Canada,” Lazarus said in an interview following his presentation. “There are many institutions today that are using it; Hillel has had a tournament; the Jewish General Hospital is having a tournament, and they’ve been very successful because the game of poker is probably one of the most popular games that exist today on the planet.”

WSOP: Leader at My Table (Las Vegas, NV)

“It’s great to see the poker players, pro and amateur alike, really embracing it as their own. That’s why this year Harrah’s has named Bad Beat On Cancer the official charitable initiative of the WSOP. It’s a great thing.

Also, at the cage during the WSOP, each time a player registers for an event there’s a red form. All you have to do is check the box on that form to pledge one percent of your winnings in that particular event. And if you don’t cash, there’s no blood. It’s a win win…”
