Player: The game of life (Kentucky)

“Hobbs, 23, was in a severe car accident near his home in Pineville, Ky. in February when he got a ride with a stranger who ended up driving over a bluff.

The driver got out, but left Hobbs there, and the car exploded, leaving him with serious burns and a list of broken bones that include a broken right clavicle and multiple pelvic fractures.

On top of those injuries, Hobbs has a lifelong, severe case of hemophilia. He arrived at Cardinal Hill Specialty Hospital at St. Luke Hospital in Fort Thomas on June 20, the latest in a series of hospital stops.

On Friday morning, his recovery – energized by the card games he played with his caregivers – hit the jackpot.

World Series of Poker winner Chris Moneymaker met Hobbs Friday morning and played Texas Hold’em. They didn’t have money or chips, so they used straws, the currency of choice for Hobbs when he plays with his therapists.

News: Can Yang save poker’s face? (Las Vegas, NV)

“If Yang spends the next year committed to charity work, he could help erase the stereotype of the selfish poker player.

Annie Duke alluded to this stereotype when she listed reasons for running a WSOP charity tournament to help the situation in Darfur. Her efforts, along with the bankrolls of dozens of players, raised more than $500,000 for a cause that desperately needs it.

Jamie Gold All In for 2008 Hedge Fund Charity Poker

“Rumor at the tables–not your typical Wall Street Activist deal involving William Ackman or David Tepper. Ackman, Tepper, and David Einhorn took part in a charity poker fundraiser for DC-Based Hillel which brought in $400,000 a month ago.

Rumor in Las Vegas is Jamie Gold, the 2006 WSOP Champ is being recruited for the event along with Renaissance Technologies head Jim Simons, with a goal of $4 million charity fundraiser and a ‘Pokerati of Wall Street’ TV series with Fox Business Channel.

Einhorn placed 18th in the 2006 WSOP giving his $650,000 to charity. Gold took the highest purse in sports history of $12 million the same year, placing first.”

WSOP: Poker Faces Inc. to Honor Troops in Newest Product Line (Las Vegas, NV)

“Poker players have been called a lot of nasty things, so it is always a special day when we get to call them philanthropists. For most of the world’s top players, day one of the main event of the World Series of Poker is all about gathering information, but today Kenna James and Humberto Brenes spent their time giving information and raising awareness about the Wounded Warriors Foundation.

WSOP: Leader at My Table (Las Vegas, NV)

“It’s great to see the poker players, pro and amateur alike, really embracing it as their own. That’s why this year Harrah’s has named Bad Beat On Cancer the official charitable initiative of the WSOP. It’s a great thing.

Also, at the cage during the WSOP, each time a player registers for an event there’s a red form. All you have to do is check the box on that form to pledge one percent of your winnings in that particular event. And if you don’t cash, there’s no blood. It’s a win win…”

Player: Episode #102 recap: Barry Greenstein

“Charity Work: It’s well known that he donates all of his tournament winnings to charity, especially Children Inc. But he wants you to know he has to pay taxes on his winnings, so people who say he has ulterior motives don’t really understand how generous he really is.”
