Casinos: Casinos give $63,000 to gambling group

“Shreveport-Bossier City casinos Tuesday gave $63,084 to the Louisiana Association on Compulsive Gambling in recognition of Responsible Gaming Week, which started Monday and ends Friday.

Boomtown Casino and Hotel, DiamondJacks Casino and Resort, Eldorado Shreveport Casino, Harrah’s Louisiana Downs, Horseshoe Casino and Hotel and Sam’s Town Hotel and Casino Shreveport each gave money that will be used to fund training, education and continued support of the association’s programs, according to a news release from the association.”

Poker becoming popular fund-raising tool (The Times-Picayune, 03/23/07)
“In the high-stakes game of charity fundraising, nonprofit groups across the state are cashing in on the popularity of poker tournaments to boost donations. In the past two years alone, the number of charity groups getting permits for casino tournaments has increased more than tenfold, from one or two a year to sometimes twice a month, according to the state Office of Charitable Gaming.”

The tournament featured 290 players who paid $100 apiece plus rebuys for the right to win a $10,000 seat at the World Series of Poker main event and other cash prizes. More important, Ortiz raised more than $20,000 for his Ortiz Family Foundation charities.
